Create a Card from a Frame and a Photo

This tutorial shows how to create a greeting card by combining two image layers and a text layer on a PC using a free image editing app. What you end up with is graphics ‘sandwich’ that you can print in as many copies as you desire. These can be holiday cards, birthday cards, invitations and anything else with graphics/text mix requirement.

What you need is:

  • some creative imagination to get the desired results
  • image editing app with layers and text features
  • the digital photos you want to use to create your greeting card
  • some good images downloaded from the internet to use as frames, free with restrictions
  • the knowledge, where required, of how to credit the author of images you have downloaded from the internet (more about this later)

I discuss free image editing apps in this article rather than paid ones like Photoshop.

I am assuming that you have connected turntable to your preamp, amplifier or receiver and that the output from the selected device is connected to the stereo mini-jack. The mini-jack end should be connected to your PC’s stereo “Line-in” jack, usually found on the back of desktop machines. Please see Part 1 – Vinyl Records of this series

Before starting, there is one very important audio setting that you should verify: is Stereo Mix enabled in my Sound Recording settings?

What you need to rip CDs are a CD/DVD drive on your computer and software capable of ripping music CDs. Most PCs have an integrated CD/DVD drive. If not, you can purchase an external drive from between $50 to $120 (Canadian).

There is plenty of free software to rip music CDs (like the CD albums you buy in any store). There is also plenty of free software to manage your music library, so I recommend using one app that will both rip and manage your music library:

Photo Themes – GIMP

Photo and Image Editing Software for Windows

My go-to app is GIMP – GNU Image Manipulation Program. It has functions similar to those found in Adobe® products and other high-end image editing software. As such, GIMP has a very steep learning curve.

This is the description on the web site:

The Free & Open Source Image Editor

GIMP is a cross-platform image editor available for GNU/Linux, OS X, Windows and more operating systems. It is free software, you can change its source code and distribute your changes.
